Kitchen Paints

The kitchen is the heart of the home, from a place for family dinners through to the classic gathering spot at parties – and increasingly, makeshift offices for working from home.

You want it to look its best, but also need a paint that’s scrubbable, hard-wearing and can stand up to steam, smoke, splashes and grease. Fortunately, our tough-wearing, sustainable, non-toxic paints have got you covered.

Our eggshell paints have been independently tested against leading competitors for durability and scrubability and won with flying colours (pardon the pun!), while our flat matt paints offer great coverage and long-lasting protection against everything a busy kitchen can throw at the walls!

While all of our paints look fantastic in any room, our expert interior designers think the below really do pop in the kitchen.

How to Paint Your Kitchen

The varied, busy life of a kitchen – parties, messy kids trying their hand at baking, partners using the counter top to work from home – means there can be a bit more prep work before starting your painting project.

1. Clean the Walls

Kitchen walls can get greasy. Clean them thoroughly with sugar soap or strong detergent, rinse with warm water, and let them dry completely.

2. Prepare the Room

Cover tiles, appliances, trim, and worktops with masking tape for clean edges. Use plastic sheets to protect worktops, appliances, and floors from drips.

3. Start from the Top

Paint from the ceiling down to avoid drips on freshly painted surfaces. Use flat matt kitchen paint for walls and ceilings, and eggshell for any wood or metal surfaces. A brush works well for smaller areas and edges.

4. Paint Cabinet Doors

Remove cabinet doors before painting. Clean with sugar soap, fill any gouges, sand, and wipe down. Use a primer if needed and an undercoat for better coverage. Our eggshell paints are excellent quality and act as their own undercoat.

We recommend painting cabinets first, as they take up a large portion of visual space – this will help you better choose complementary wall colours.

5. Paint Woodwork

Finish by painting woodwork from top to bottom. Start with windows, then the door, door frame, architrave, and skirting.

Choosing Kitchen Paint Colours

Depending on the style of your home, your kitchen can be anything from soft and calming through to bright and breezy, and all things in between! The days of a kitchen as simply functional are long gone, and many people choose to get really expressive and turn their kitchens into real statement rooms. Which kitchen paint colour is right for you?

  • Warm and Cosy: Neutral colours like soft beige and creamy white create a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Fresh and Modern: Bright white is a classic choice for both traditional and contemporary kitchens.
  • Cool Statements: Colours like blue, purple, grey, and green are versatile and great for feature walls or bold statements.

Do I Need to Prime?

Depending on the surface, you might need a primer. We recommend our own primer for all projects using flat matt – especially if the walls need a little more TLC due to hard-wear over the years. Our eggshell paints do act as their own undercoat, however, so a primer may not be necessary.

Should I choose flat matt or eggshell for my kitchen?

Matt Finish

  • Appearance: Matt kitchens are appreciated for their ability to blend with various designs, offering a smooth and non-reflective look.
  • Practicality: This finish hides smudges, fingerprints, and imperfections well, making it a practical choice for busy kitchens.
  • Light Absorption: Matt surfaces absorb light, which can make the space seem smaller and cozier. However, this might not be ideal for kitchens with limited natural light, as it can create a darker atmosphere.
  • Style Compatibility: Works well with traditional and contemporary designs, providing a versatile backdrop that can complement any kitchen style.

Gloss Finish

  • Appearance: Gloss finishes are known for their reflective properties, which can make a kitchen look larger and more vibrant.
  • Practicality: Easy to clean with just a damp cloth, gloss surfaces are ideal for kitchens where spills and stains are common. However, they do show fingerprints and smudges more easily, especially in darker colours.
  • Light Reflection: By reflecting light, gloss finishes can brighten up a kitchen, making it appear more spacious and lively. This is particularly beneficial for small or dimly lit kitchens.
  • Style Compatibility: Ideal for modern, sleek designs. Gloss finishes work well with minimalist and contemporary kitchens, offering a chic and polished look. However, they may clash with rustic or traditional elements.

Choose the finish that best suits your kitchen's lighting, design, and practical needs.
